Oswiecim

Monday 4th July

We were in two minds about going to Oswiecim, Auschwitz. In the end we decided to go. (There are two ways you can go, individual or as a group with a guide. If you go between 10am and 3pm you must go with a guide. It is free to enter but you must pay for the guide services ). We got up early and did the 1. 5hr drive and were at  the entrance at 8.00am, had our bags security checked and entered Auschwitz while it was quiet and before the tour buses arrived.

We were glad to be able to walk and follow the info signage at our own pace and in the quiet.  It worked for us, not sure experiencing this in a big group would be the same.

Having an understanding of Auschwitz from news media, books etc in no way prepares you for how you feel as you walk through Auschwitz 1 and Auschwitz 2, Birkenhau.  (Limited pics this post).

Both camps are surrounded by beautiful green trees. The lush countryside beyond the wires and the  bird song is in stark  contrast to the grim, shocking and heartbreaking experience you go through as you read the info plaques and walk through the camp buildings which fully detail what took place in each building with personal stories, film footage and photographs.  Everyone, while we were there, was more or less silent. It's an experience you can't stop thinking about and so deeply moving, it will stay with us forever.
