Climb every mountain

Saturday 9 July  2016

Coming to you from  "Austria´s most beautiful village" and also "Europe´s most beautiful flower village", Alpbach in the Austrian Alp's.

After breakfast on the deck and admiring the mountains it was time to get out there amongst it all.

The five villages in this part of the Alp's have a  free bus service for guests/visitors to/from the mountain lifts and use of the lifts with the guest card is free.... not bad!

Our host explained they are trying to minimize all the visitors driving about and creating pollution and also to minimise parking issues. In Austria and in most of Europe we have noticed the extensive use of solar panels, (buildings clad in solar panels, car parking overhead shade made from solar panels as opposed to long run iron sheet... excellent as it's blooming hot here in summer) electric car charging terminals at Mcdonalds car parking and cycles/cycle lanes are everywhere.

Free visitor card in hand we took the gondola up to the highest station, approx 1900mtres, and then walked on to almost the highest point on Wiedersberger Horn.

In  winter this entire area would be blanketed in snow, there are 2 gondola  and 15 ski lifts. In summer it's a hikers and mountain bikers paradise, most visitors looked to be in the 40+ age group, from the UK and all armed with hiking poles. They have  a nifty system of attaching the mountain bikes to the outside of the gondola. There are several alpine meadows and the flowers are so pretty.

The cows were enjoying the summer meadows and as they moved about their neck bells tinkled, very picturesque.
