Nevers, a day in the country

Friday 15 July 2016

We woke to the news of the tragic events in Nice at the Bastille Day celebrations, a very sombre day in France.

We were heading for Nevers via the backroads, away from motorways and busy-ness. The rural countryside is delightful, it's at its best considering its early summer, the corn fields looked  lush, the wheat and hay was golden and busy being harvested.

The back roads are great, you never know what you may come across and every turn in the road reveals something new.  After driving for a bit we fancied a cuppa so took a turn toward a little set of rooftops we could see across the fields and we came into Prisse, a perfect little village. We would never have seen this if we were zooming along the motorways .

Of course you need cake to go with coffee, the patisserie chefs here really are artists!

Driving along the back roads there is no shortage of chateau. They were just bobbing up everywhere you turned, look towards a hill and sure enough, another château .

Even the little farm out buildings look elegant.

Another side road turning and we came across a feat of  engineering, a canal suspended above the Loire river. This was a method used to transport goods from the Mediterranean to the north of France, now the canals are enjoyed by holidaymakers . They are so pretty.

Check out this chateau, we drove post the incredible gate house and had to go back and we did a loop down the driveway as it looked like a heritage site but it wasn't open for another hour but  we enjoyed our sneak peak.

Nevers, our home for the night.

The Nevers Cathedral has been destroyed twice and rebuilt, it dates from the 14th century and is slap bang amongst the little town streets and traffic.

The Parc Ducal de Nevers was the home to the Dukes and Counts of Nevers and dates also from 15th century, these days it houses the town hall functions. The design is said to be one of the first castles in Loire.

No detail on  the church below, we found it down a side street but its facade is worth zooming in on.

Two sculptures of the day. One is traditional ,  zoom in on the inscription, and the other is a modern sculpture found alongside the Loire river canal bridge.

  1. OMG! Look out for my daughter Clair. She is cycling in this very place. She sent me a photo of the aqueduct! Keep an eye out for a wee solo rider.
