Nevers, Saint Bernadette and Apremont sur Allier

Saturday 16 July 2016

It was quite by  chance we took the back roads to Nevers and last night we discovered it is the home to the Chasse Saint Bernadette. So this morning, before we hit the road proper, we went and visited the shrine and chapel.

It was early so very quiet and peaceful and Saint Bernadette is lying  in a glass coffin in the side chapel. She looked tiny but then I don't think girls at the time were very tall.    They   have recreated a grotto to represent where St Bernadette saw her vision, you  can light a candle and it really was serene, just birds singing in the lovely gardens.

What a beautiful, peaceful place, so glad we visited.

Then we hit the road for Malemort Sur Correze, where we are staying two nights. We took the back roads again as we were not in a hurry and the green of the countryside beats grey motorway tarmac hands down.

The fields had great big  round  hay bales peppered throughout  and they were gleaming  in the sunlight, so much nicer than pink or green plastic coated hay bales you seen in NZ.

We stumbled upon another chocolate box village today, Apremont sur Allier, it's nestled in the bend of the Allier river and we stopped and had a coffee and just took in the views, stunning.

The hydrangeas were as big as dinner plates!

Sculpture of the day is....tree of the day, the glorious copper beech in the picture below.
