Ryan Air flight to Chania.....sat on the tarmac for an hour as the flight traffic in the area was very busy.....military flight traffic as well as weekend flight traffic to Crete. Got the local bus to the old town and found our Pension. Its right in the old harbour in a dilapadated old building that once would have been lovely. The location is fabulous and the view from the roof terrace incredible. Chania is a lovely port town, the old town has rambling old streets which switch back and you could wander for hours. The main port area has the usual sea front restaurant touts, horse and carriage rides and the usual beggars...its no worse or better than other places. I can't believe how many restaurants are in all these seaside towns and villages........the majority are empty and you feel very sorry to be continually saying no to enticements to dine. I hope it picks up in the next few weeks or the locals will be struggling. The history of this area is fascinating, a Venetian port with an arsenal, Jewish quarter, Turkish quarter.....a Dominican Monastery with a minuret, a Catholic French School of Nuns.....ruins....old buildings and an artistic renewal.
Very pretty around the back streets, the artistic quarter has really gorgeous avant-garde art work, paintings and jeweller..... think Cuba St and Martinborough combined.
Off to Heraklion in a few days to get the ferry to Santorini.
